Fresh and Salt Water Spinning

Let's row over to that sloping shore, directly across from the cliff. See, just as we expected, it drops off suddenly over a rock ledge. Watch those oarlocks. We've got to approach carefully. In shallows, fish seem to frighten more easily, maybe it's because they are farther from a haven of refuge and keep one eye cocked for poachers. And don't move any more than you have to. Fish spot motion a long way off. But keep right on talking. Conversational noises, unless terribly loud, do not penetrate the water like the sound from an oarlock which seems to be amplified by the boat's bottom. Foot noises are bad too. We'll spin the shoals first, just in case. Then, fish your lure deeper, bringing it past the deep drop-off ledge. Sometimes this area will fish more easily when you move your boat alongside the edge of this ledge and lower your anchor very quietly. Next let's explore that cove like inlet with the boggy water and the tangle of willows. Such overhung coves usually have weed beds, too, full of bottom food. Look for a small creek entering it, a wonderful food and cool-water carrier. Approach this shallow area carefully, unless you're satisfied with merely seeing a slight telltale cloud of muddy water rising from where a big one skipped out ahead of your approach.
