Fresh and Salt Water Spinning

To be sure, a skillful surface angler will occasionally extract large fish near the top in swift water, but by the nature of the big fish's food, habits and resting places, lunkers and surface anglers seldom get together. In the less swift stream water, there will be other food-safety rest areas. Sometimes they will be along shaded ledges, under roots, and often under overhanging branches which not only provide shade and coolness to the water but also food in the form of bugs, larvae, caterpillars and even mice or an occasional fledgling. To exploit these hot spots demands precision in lure presentation. If that meant only hitting a trout on the nose every time, it would be comparatively simple. Precision with a spinning lure means much more than that. The angler must select his spot to cast to maybe ten, twenty or even thirty feet away, from which his lure will sweep down to the big fish's exact location despite the onrushing current. But even so, the spinman is not to be pitied. After all, he has the ideal gear to work his lure to the bottom where the big fish are, and if the lure's action is attractive, woe to the fish!
