This may be hard to believe. As many an angler knows, it can take up to 20 years of hard fishing to become a truly accomplished dry-fly angler. Yet, by using a weighted plastic bubble, it is possible for the spinman, within twenty minutes, that's right, minutes not years, to cast a tiny No. 16 dry fly 75 feet with a 4-ounce rod into trouty water and then do what no dry-fly man ever could do, hop-skip that dry fly on the water and make it resemble an insect laying eggs. With what result? You guessed it. That egg-laying action, far out in comparatively unfished water, will even drive big trout nutty. And what a show it is to see adult fish, who ought to know better, bounce out of the water, time and again, in their frenzy to hit your hopped-up fly. Do you wonder why even the most casehardened dry-fly purists are taking to spinning with a light rod and bubble? When the bubble is properly fished, up to now it hasn't been 99 per cent of the time, not only can the dry fly be deadly but also the nymph, wet-fly, streamer, single salmon egg or hellgrammite. Unfortunately, most bubbles are incorrectly designed. The manufacturers' only thought, apparently, has been to provide the spinman with enough weight to carry out his weightless lures. However, with improvisation, the angler can remedy most shortcomings. 13A & B
