If steady trolling does not deliver, try variations. Let out more line and troll more slowly; this will put the fly deeper. Or jerk it spasmodically, every 15 or 20 seconds, bringing it in with sharp 18-inch jabs, and then let it go again to give your fly a sort of helpless, struggling action. This retrieve worked extremely well one fall off Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island, when I was skipping my Cohoe streamer fly across the top of the choppy water and hanging into silvers running anywhere from 5 to 10 pounds. What wonderful action that was on my 2 -ounce Winston hollow-fluted bamboo rod. 12 A & B Figure 12. Fill your bubbles at home. Using mineral oil (12 A) prevents evaporation and loss of weight. The cork tends to pop out upon hitting the water, hence, after you have eye-droppered the desired amount, seal the plug with fingernail polish (12 B). To increase visibility daub some spots with red or yellow fingernail polish, the latter, of course, can be seen farther.
