Fresh and Salt Water Spinning

Should there be little current in the water and should the pool be deep, change pace constantly. After the cast, let the lure sink a few feet, then reel, sinking and reeling in different lengths and different levels. This way, you will induce vertical action along with horizontal, which may be effective. But occasionally, make a steady retrieve, too. That's fishing. When drifting live bait, always try for a natural action, and in faster water keep the bait near the bottom of the main channel. Usually, it's best to keep the pick-up arm off and hold the line by touching the spool with your index finger. Should the bait pull steady and tend to come off the bottom, pay out line. If necessary, wave your rod tip across gently to speed extra line through the guides. But don't get out too much line, either. Maintain a sufficient tension to be ready to hook the fish without a lot of slack intervening. Your sensitive rod tip will tell you when the bait drags on the bottom. Stop feeding more line, and lift the rod slightly.
