Fresh and Salt Water Spinning

Figure 11. The spin-the-circle cast (11A) drops your lure into difficult, off- to-the-side spots. With the rod tip pointing slightly downward, twirl the lure with the tip as you would a sling. When momentum is gained, let the lure go. Like all close-in shots, this spin-the-circle can be deadly, when mastered, because it will let you get into the seldom-fished spots where big fish rest. By reversing the spin, you can cast the lure backhand. Use the down-in-the-front job (11B) when standing on an abrupt bank with brush to both sides and above you. Lower the tip of the rod below your foot level. With the lure hanging from 24 to 30 inches, start swinging the lure in and out and then let 'er go with an up-and-out flip. When standing on a bridge, you can use this cast either upstream or downstream in hard-to-get-to places. With this practice behind you, you'll be agreeably surprised at how productive your next season's fishing will be, providing, of course, you next master the retrieve. HOW TO FISH THE SPINNING LURES After you've learned to practice-cast accurately and delicately, you're ready to come to grips with the fish. Let's get at some water. Test your lure first to determine its best operating speed. Fished faster or slower than its designer intended, it will not produce as well.
