First let's take up the question of spinning equipment. The others will be answered later in the book. But before you spend a dime on your new gear, may I suggest that you read this entire section on equipment, reels, rods, lines, lures? It may save you fully half the cost of your spinning outfit. Whether an angler likes to admit it or not, about 75 percent of all his fishing gear gathers dust on the top shelf. For your own pleasure and profit, won't you decide right now, with the help of this book, to make your spinning outfit a long-term investment and get only what you need but make that the best you can possible afford? THE SPINNING REEL The reel is the most important item of your spin fishing. On an average day's fishing it will make from 25,000 to 50,000 revolutions. To stand up under such pressure, it must be well machined and durable. Therefore, get the best reel you can afford. You'll never regret it. Basically there are three spinning-reel sizes, each appropriate to its job: (1) The small fresh-water reel (2) The medium-sized reel for both fresh and salt water (3) The big-sized reel for salt water. To date, there is one beautiful small fresh-water reel; there are a dozen excellent medium-sized reels, and I know of no poor salt-water reel. See Figure 1. 1 Figure 1
