Among the surface lures are flies, bugs, frogs, poppers and plugs. By keeping the rod tip high and reeling quickly, the jointed minnow imitations can be kept almost on the surface, too. When using popping bugs or other surface lures for bass, work them in fits and starts, with plenty of action. Bit take care that your line is wound back on the spool without loose turns or loops. The best way to do this is to maintain an even pressure on your line by letting it run between the thumb and forefinger of your rod-holding hand. How to handle surface flies, wet flies, salmon eggs, night crawlers, and other soft lures on a bubble is so important and new that it is discussed in a special section in Chapter II.
