Fresh and Salt Water Spinning

Some lure faults can be minimized once the angler has gained experience. Lifting the rod and holding the lure just out of the water on the retrieve allows the line to untwist. A keel or rudder placed in front of an offending lure will usually eliminate line twist, thought often it impairs the lure's action. (It is better to use pairs of opposite-turning lures.) Halting the lure just before it hits the water will sometimes straighten the hooks behind it. Few things are more disconcerting than getting a cast off to a promising start, only to have it skid a dozen feet off the target when it descends, due to a gusty wind. But the benefit accruing from a wind-slicing lure that casts like a bullet can be more than offset by its poor fish-taking ability. However, the Wob-L-Rite proves the exception. It casts well and takes fish. On steelhead in particular the 1/2 ounce Wob-L-Rite is a proven killer. When water conditions are difficult, that is, when the water is low, clear and warm, a flashing lure will sometimes attract fish. On dark days, particularly. A bright lure has the further advantage of letting the spinman know exactly where it is in the water and it therefore helps him make the proper alterations in speed and depth of retrieve. To keep it shining bright, polish the blade frequently. Hint: Do not touch the blade with your oily finger tips or you will dull its luster immediately.
