Fresh and Salt Water Spinning

Although du Pont has some new stronger fibers in the works, the strongest diameter for diameter spinning line available today seems to be platyl, a German importation. It's what the doctor ordered for spinning, completely limp and extremely pliable, making for smooth and longer casts, besides practically eliminating coiling and springing from the spool. Nylon monofilament, also extruded in single filament, is almost as good in the lightweight tests, say from 2 to 6 pounds. Monofilament lines do not fray, split or get brittle. Besides, they are cheaper. But sad to say, the more expensive French nylon monofilaments are better than domestic ones: they are more pliable, softer, less stretchy, and for diameter size, have a higher test strength. In the medium test lines, say from 4 to 12 pounds, braided nylon monofilament is best. It is hard, but fairly pliable, and shoots wonderfully well. Its one disadvantage is that it is hard on the guides. In the heavy tests, over 8 pounds, primarily for deep-sea fishing, which sometimes entails casting a 3-ounce weight, braided nylon, consisting of many more threads than the braided nylon monofilament, is preferred by many casters who say that other lines tend to be too stuff in the heavier tests. For comparative strengths in the 2-pound tests, where every ounce counts, these are the approximate diameters listed by the manufacturers: American .004 inch; French nylon (Tortue) .003 inch; platyl .0025 inch.
