When the first coat is thoroughly dry, work it down gently with fine steel wool. Be sure to get these tiny wool fibres off the wrappings before you apply your next coat of varnish. For a super-special job, hand-rub your blanks with a pumice-and-water paste or with fine steel wool before mounting the guides. Then, after the guides are wrapped, ink your name, address and the rod's length and weight on the rod iii tiny script. Then varnish the whole rod. If it is a bamboo rod you are autographing, scrape the varnish off the surface, put on a thin coat of color preservative, and then ink in your name, otherwise the ink will run on the bamboo.
