For a custom-built appearance, add a trim. A neat job can be done by starting the trim wrap against the wrap and winding away from it. For balance, confine these trim wraps to ten turns. Five is better. Insert the tie-off thread at the start of the trim wrap. Don't overdo the trim. That will make it look amateurish. 24B (24B) With the back of the knife blade or your thumbnail, push the wrapping up solid so that the rod or guides do not show through. Pull up again on the thread ends and trim them oft very closely with a razor blade, being exceedingly careful not to cut into the wrap. 24C (24C) After sighting down the rod again, to make certain that the guides are in perfect alignment, give the wrappings a coat of color preservative. Without it, varnish dulls the thread's color. Be sure the preservative penetrates into the crevice formed between the wrap an4 the guide feet. A wonderful home. made preservative is one part Duco household cement to one part amyl acetate. To finish, apply several coats of rod varnish to all wraps. This can be done best with your thumb and forefinger. Fingers minimize the tendency of air bubbles to form in the finish. Five thin coats are better than one or two heavy coats. To lay it on thin, dip the face of your dry index finger into the rod varnish, then press your thumb and index finger together to coat both surfaces. By rotating the wrapping between these surfaces a very smooth thin coat can be applied.
