(23B) Place the thread spool behind an old book, preferably your well-read copy of The Complete Angler. Open the book and pull off about 2 feet of wrapping thread and insert it between the pages and close the book. Pile up additional books to increase the thread tension until it suits you. Place the rod across a chair's arms and you are ready to start wrapping. A few practice turns will determine the right thread tension. 24A Figure 24. Start by wrapping over the end of the thread toward the guide so that the thread end is held down by the wrapping (24A). Wrapping from in front of the guide and up over the guide's foot will give you the best wrap. To get a smooth wrap at the tip top you may wish to wrap double, that is, wrap toward the tip top and then double back. Using the tension from the books to hold the wrappings tightly, continue to turn the rod so that each thread lies as close as possible to the preceding turn. Five turns from the finish of the wrap, insert the loop of a tie-off thread, a 6-inch piece of slightly heavier thread. Finish the wrap over this tie-off thread. Holding the wrap tightly, cut oft the wrapping thread about 4 inches above your rod and insert this cut end through the tie-oft loop. Still holding on to the wrapping thread, pull smartly on both ends of the tie-oft thread. This will put the wrapping thread under the wrap. Pull it up fairly tight.
