Tape on your large gathering guide first (21B), from 19 inches to 23 beyond the top of the cork grip. This guide must have sufficient distance from the reel spool to permit the line to balloon and have a saddle high enough to prevent line slapping. 22 Figure 22. The secret in placing the remaining guides is to prevent the line from touching the rod when it is flexed. Because no two rods, either bamboo or glass, bend exactly alike, the guide spacing will vary. To do this properly, anchor the butt of your rod at a 45 degree angle. Then hang a weight from the tip. On the back 0/the rod, tape on the matched guides progressively closer toward the tip so that a line pulled taut through these guides will not touch the rod. Rubber bands can be used, too. It may be necessary to bend the guides slightly so that the feet will fit flat on the rod. File or hone sharp edges on the top surface of the feet of the guides to eliminate the danger of cutting your wrapping threads. 23A Figure 23. Align the guides with the tip top (23A). Make adjustments where necessary. Perfect alignment is highly desirable. The angle of the camera is deceptive. The closer guides, of course, are much smaller. 23B
