Fresh and Salt Water Spinning

The following instructions have been boiled down to minimum essentials, yet, when followed, they will produce a splendid, serviceable rod. These are the things you will need: * Hollow glass rod blanks complete with cork grip, metal bands and the middle ferrule. * A matched set of graduated spinning guides. * A tip top. * Wrapping thread, silk or nylon. * Rod cement. * Color preservative. * Rod varnish. * Fine wire wool. * Scotch tape, adhesive or rubber bands. * The following miscellaneous items: a piece of chalk, some books, a pocket knife, a razor blade, and a short length of thread. Most sporting-goods stores can supply these things. If you cannot get the spinning rod blanks to suit your needs, complete with cork handle, middle ferrule and metal reel seat bands There are several good spinning guides on the market, the lightest is a hard chrome-plated wire Foulproof guide made by the Aetna anufacturing Co., 2636 Ontario Street, Burbank, California. These guides flex with the rod but they must be treated carefully. More rugged guides, but heavier, are made by W. W. Mildrum Jewel Co., East Berlin, Connecticut, and Perfection Tip Co., Box 13, Capitol Hill Station, Denver, Colorado. The gathering guide should stand at least 3/8 inch off the rod blank and the succeeding guides should have a correspondingly high saddle, lessening toward the tip top, which must also be offset at an angle to reduce friction.
