Let's begin with the first point. With a light reel, light line, and light lure one would naturally say, I'll pick a light, short rod. But wait. How does this fit with the kind of fish? With fishing conditions? Suppose the fish is a bull-dogging Dolly Varden rather than a fast-fighting rainbow. Obviously the heavy bull-dogging fish will require a heavier stick to bring him up. For open water, perhaps you'll want a longer one which will cast farther and play your fish better. If it is windy of the water has a swift current, you may wish a slightly heavier rod, although reel, line and lure remain much the same. If there are obstructions such as lily pads and logs, perhaps a still stronger and slightly heavier rod will fit the bill.
